Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide consisting of the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro (MEHFPGP), developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow as a synthetic fragment derived from the N-terminal region of ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone, residues 4-10) with a Pro-Gly-Pro C-terminal extension for peptidase resistance. As an ACTH-derived peptide, Semax has been investigated for melanocortin receptor binding (MC3R, MC4R, MC5R) and BDNF gene expression endpoints in preclinical research literature (Myasoedov, Levitskaya, Andreeva, and colleagues).
