Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide consisting of the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro (TKPRPGP), developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow as a synthetic analog of the natural immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin (a 4-amino-acid fragment of IgG Fc heavy chain, residues 289-292). Selank extends the tuftsin sequence with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide that confers peptidase resistance and extended plasma stability compared to natural tuftsin. The compound has been extensively investigated in Russian academic literature (Semenova, Andreeva, Myasoedov, and colleagues) for tuftsin receptor binding, GABAergic gene expression endpoints, BDNF expression in hippocampal cell research, and Th1/Th2 cytokine balance in immune cell research models.
