Humanin is a 24-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA (MT-RNR2) gene, discovered in 2001 by the Hashimoto group while screening cDNA libraries from surviving neurons of Alzheimer's disease patients. Humanin is one of a small family of bioactive peptides encoded directly within mitochondrial DNA, alongside MOTS-c and the SHLP peptide family.
